Father Figure (For Our Daughters)

Father figure father figure,
Where are you?
Your daughter is a beautiful soul,
Through and through,
But my man,
Where are you?

She got older now,
Reaching her second destination,
Got her high school diploma,
Rapidly approaching college graduation,
You been absent so long,
She’s wondering how she can take it,
Pretty soon,
She can say,
She made it,

Father figure father figure,
Where are you?
Your daughter is a beautiful soul,
Through and through,
But my man,
Where are you?

She’s a grown woman,
With beautiful kids,
And a husband that treats her right,
Like she wish you did,

She finds herself having a meltdown,
Thinking “dear daddy,
Why you never showed up now?”

She tries to come up with answers somehow,
While no presence in front of her,
To respond now,

She looks at his tombstone,
Because she had no way,
To make it to the funeral,
She got a letter that was unusual,
That stated her dad died three years ago,
A letter from an anonymous sender though,
She tries to reach conclusions so,
She leans on her family’s love,
To heal the wounds of her heart’s bullet holes
